Reporting to Parents

Private: Explore St Paul’s Reporting to Parents

We believe that strong partnerships between home and school are essential to student success.

That’s why we place a high value on clear, consistent, and accessible communication with parents and carers. Our approach to reporting goes beyond traditional grades; it provides a holistic picture of each child’s progress, effort, and development throughout the year.

We are committed to ensuring that parents feel well-informed and confident in supporting their child’s journey through secondary school.

Key Features of Our Reporting Approach

Termly Progress Reports

Families receive regular progress reports throughout the year, highlighting how students are performing across subjects in relation to their target grades. These reports include effort grades and may also highlight behaviour and attendance.

Parent-Teacher Evenings

Scheduled throughout the academic year, these evenings provide an opportunity for in-depth conversations with subject teachers. Parents can discuss their child’s achievements, areas for development, and how best to support them at home.

Target Setting and Review

We help students set meaningful academic and personal goals. These are reviewed regularly by tutors and subject staff to ensure that every child remains focused, motivated, and supported.

Pastoral Support

Our form tutors, Heads of Year, and pastoral team monitor each child’s wellbeing and personal development. Where appropriate, we communicate proactively with families to celebrate success or provide early support when challenges arise.

The Way We report

Effective two-way communication between student, parent and teacher is essential in supporting our young learners to reach their full potential.

Our teachers report to parents up to three times a year using a mixture of reporting styles:

Interim

Grades and concern codes from teachers regarding the student’s approach to their learning, effort in class, meeting ILT deadlines and conduct.

Mock

Grades and concern codes for Year 11, 12 and 13 students following the mock examinations in December/January.

Parents' Consultation Evenings

Together We Can Make a Real Difference

We believe that when schools and families work together, students thrive. Strong relationships between parents, teachers and students are at the heart of every child’s success, which is why we place such value on Parents’ Evenings.

Before you arrive, we encourage you to read your child’s report and chat with them about what’s going well and where they might need more support. It can help to note down any questions you’d like to ask as this often makes conversations with teachers more focused and meaningful.

Parents’ Evening can be an anxious time for parents. Our staff will make you feel welcome, helping you to relax and get the most out of the evening. It may be helpful to make notes so that you can reflect on the discussions you have had with your child’s teachers when you get home. Appointments are short; if you feel this is not enough time to discuss everything that you need to, contact your child’s teacher to arrange further discussion.

Appointments for Parents’ Evening are made online. We will contact you several weeks before the evening with instructions for booking appointments.

Grades Explained

Understanding GCSE Grades

Students at St Paul’s work towards GCSE qualifications graded on a scale of 9 to 1, with 9 being the highest. These grades replace the old A*–G system. A grade 4 is considered a standard pass, and a 5 is a strong pass.

Your Opinion Matters

Parent View gives you the chance to tell Ofsted what you think about St Paul’s Catholic College, on issues ranging from the quality of teaching to how we deal with issues such as bullying or behaviour.

The survey can be completed at any time; you don’t have to wait until an Ofsted inspection. The feedback that you provide is anonymously passed onto us at St Paul’s to help us to continue to improve.
